All day long. Saying things like:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Sunset<br \/>\n<\/strong>This is an imagistic verbing \u00e2\u20ac\u201c &#8220;We&#8217;re going to sunset that project\/service\/version&#8221; \u00e2\u20ac\u201c that sounds more humane and poetic than &#8220;cancel&#8221; or &#8220;kill&#8221; or &#8220;stop supporting&#8221;. When faced with the choice between calling a spade a spade or using a cloying euphemism, you know which the bosses will choose. Happily, sunsetting also sounds less smelly than the venerable old mothballing.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Issues<\/strong><br \/>\nTo call something a &#8220;problem&#8221; is utterly\u00a0<em>verboten<\/em>\u00a0in the office: it&#8217;s bound\u00a0to a) scare the horses and b), even worse, focus responsibility on the\u00a0bosses. So let us instead deploy the\u00a0compassionate counselling-speak of &#8220;issues&#8221;. The critic (and manager) Robert Potts translates &#8220;There are some issues around X&#8221; as: &#8220;There is a problem so big that we are scared to even talk about it directly.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Actually, I&#8217;m guilty on that one \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n<p>Poole also writes the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/series\/steven-poole-on-words\" target=\"_blank\">On Words<\/a>\u00a0series at The Guardian and is the author of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/s\/?_encoding=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;linkCode=ur2&amp;pageMinusResults=1&amp;suo=1388697374845&amp;tag=text-media-20&amp;url=search-alias%3Daps#\/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&amp;field-keywords=unspeak&amp;sprefix=unspe%2Caps&amp;rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3Aunspeak&amp;sepatfbtf=true&amp;tc=1388697375438\" target=\"_blank\">Unspeak<\/a>, a brilliant book on how words become weapons.<\/p>\n<p>Doublespeak is not only the annoying source for some office humor. Using these words and not calling things by their name is a recipe for misunderstanding, uncertainty and fear. It&#8217;s the reason why some environments become toxic.
